Metro will be developed and the West High-Speed Diameter will be built in St. Petersburg. Other projects are not considered to be paramount. City administration reviewed on Tuesday, November 22, a new St. Petersburg transport strategy till 2015 with a perspective for 2025. Based on words of the Head of the Committee on Transport and Transit Policy, Aleksey Bakirey, current St. Petersburg public transportation network and road-street network do not comply with norms for such a developing European megalopolis. Based on official's data, even though 70% of the citizens daily use public transportation, quality of its services is poor. The metro is developing extremely slow and currently only 30% of highly-populated areas are covered by metro services. During rush hours, filling of cars exceeds the norms by 1.3 times. The most overloaded line is “Moskovsko-Petrogradskaya” line. Public transportation also suffers during rush hours. Speed in traffic jams does not exceed 8-12 km per hour, interval between transportation means appearence is more than 15 minutes. It is planned to construct new metro stations and allocate lines for public transportation to improve the situation. The city promises to please car-drivers with a quick development of the West High-Speed Diameter with an exit to Obvodnuy channel, which will become an uninterrupted traffic highway, as well as with construction and reconstruction of bridges across the Neva. |
